Moving your pet from Los Angeles to London is a straightforward process when handled by professionals. While the UK does not require quarantine for pets arriving from the US, all animals must enter as manifested cargo and comply strictly with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) regulations.
Import Requirements for the UK
To ensure your pet clears customs at London Heathrow (LHR) without delay, they must have:
- Microchip: An ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip.
- Rabies Vaccination: Administered at least 21 days prior to travel.
- Tapeworm Treatment (Dogs Only): Administered by a vet 24 to 120 hours before entering the UK.
- Great Britain Health Certificate: Completed by an accredited vet and endorsed by the USDA within 10 days of arrival.
Arriving at London Heathrow (LHR)
All pets arriving at Heathrow are transported to the Animal Reception Centre (HARC).
- HARC staff will review your pet’s paperwork, scan their microchip, and ensure they are fit for entry.
- Customs clearance can take between 4 to 8 hours after the flight lands.

Transfer of Residency (ToR)
If you are moving your primary residence to the UK, you should apply for a Transfer of Residency (ToR) number. This will waive the standard 20% Value Added Tax (VAT) that is otherwise applied to the cost of your pet and the shipping charges.
